"Hogmanay" is an ancient tradition that was introduced to Scotland by invading Vikings between the 8th & 9th centuries, and is still celebrated today! Athena, our resident scholar, says the name may have originated from Anglo-Saxon, Gaelic, Old English, French, Old French, Norman French, Flemish, Spanish or even Greek, but most likely from the Scandinavian "Hoggo-nott," (a mid-winter festival of Yule). Pandora our, resident wild-child, wonders if "Hoggo-nott" might not mean "to hug one's nuts". Thoughts anyone?
